This is so lovely, and a tale of rural life I can relate to, as well! Over the last decade (more!), we've been fed countless buckets of ripe tomatoes, peppers, seedlings, cabbages for the sheep and chickens, trees grown from seed, clothes the neighbors used to wear 30 years ago (the quality!), advice, chit chats, and endless generosity. Giving back is part of the cycle, and one I love so, so much.
It's definitely a rural community thing, I agree. When there's so little of us living in these areas (at least, that is the case here), we gotta stick together and care for each other 💛
I love what you said about taking care of each other. I have a feeling when things get tough, we’ll be able to rely on our neighbors and they can turn to us for help which is so comforting!
This is so sweet! Living in Maine with an older population has its perks for sure. They grew up in a different time, where neighbors knew each other by name and made time for one another. This is our first year having a garden and I'm hoping we have plenty of bounty to share with neighbors and friends! Also, someone I spoke to two summers ago told me people grow so much food here you have to lock your car or people will drop veggies in the back, haha!
I’ve heard that too, especially when they talk about zucchini 😅 and yes, living in maine and amongst the older generation feels like stepping back into a simpler time. Most people when they give me their phone numbers, they don’t even add the area code which always stuns me, having lived in so many different places !
I love this, and it’s definitely a rural community thing. Here where we live on the Isle of Skye, our neighbours are often generous with homemade jam, vegetables, home baked goods. It’s lovely. We reciprocate and it combines to make a circle of giving. Such a lovely way to live

It is so nice, and comforting to know that we take care of each other. I can’t live any other way now
